Fast 8, Reroll and Slowroll: TFT Leveling Strategies

Fast 8 means saving gold, jumping to level 8 quickly and rolling for 4-cost champions. Reroll means staying at a low level and rolling to 3-star 1, 2 or 3-cost champions. Slowroll means holding a level and rolling only the gold above 50, so you keep your interest.

Why your level matters

Your level sets two things: how many units you field and your shop odds. Each level makes expensive champions more likely and cheap ones less likely. The table shows the chance that a shop slot is of each cost at every level.

Each cell is the chance that a single shop slot is of that cost.
Level1 cost2 cost3 cost4 cost5 cost
375%25%0%0%0%
455%30%15%0%0%
545%33%20%2%0%
630%40%25%5%0%
719%30%40%10%1%
815%20%32%30%3%
910%17%25%33%15%
105%10%20%40%25%

You get 2 XP for free at the start of every round, and 4 gold buys 4 XP. Level 1 to 8 takes 132 XP in total, and level 9 takes 200.

Which level for which cost

  • 1-cost reroll: level 5. The 1-cost chance is 45%. It is higher at level 4 (55%), but you field one unit fewer.
  • 2-cost reroll: level 6. The 2-cost chance is 40%, the highest at any level.
  • 3-cost reroll: level 7. The 3-cost chance is 40%, again its peak.
  • 4-cost carry: level 8 (30%) or level 9 (33%).
  • 5-cost carry: 15% at level 9 and 25% at level 10. Only 3% at level 8.

The rule: roll where the odds for your cost peak. Going higher adds board slots but makes cheap champions harder to find; staying lower barely shows you the expensive ones.

What are fast 8 and fast 9?

In fast 8 the goal is a comp built around a strong 4-cost carry. You bank gold for interest early, take levels on time, hit level 8 at the start of stage 4 and roll down there. The 2 and 3-costs are only there to survive until then.

Level 7 to 8 takes 56 XP, which is 56 gold from an empty bar. That is why fast 8 runs on early economy: a player who does not finish stage 3 near 50 gold cannot both level and roll at the start of stage 4.

The risk is health: until level 8 your board runs on placeholder units. With a strong start and a win streak that is fine; with a weak start you have to manage health, and if you are loss streaking you need to reach stage 4 with health to spare.

Fast 9 takes the same idea one step further: you go to level 9 for 5-cost champions. Level 8 to 9 takes 68 XP (68 gold), so it needs a strong economy or a solid level 8 board. At level 9 each slot is a 5-cost with 15% chance.

What is reroll? 1, 2 and 3-cost reroll

Reroll comps are built on 3-starring a cheap carry. You stay at the level where that cost's odds peak, because expensive champions do not clog the shop there. A 3-star takes 9 copies; the pool has 30 of each 1-cost, 25 of each 2-cost and 18 of each 3-cost.

The usual flow: once you reach your reroll level, slowroll with the gold above 50. When the 3-stars are done, keep leveling and fill the board with expensive units. An opponent playing the same carry shares the pool with you; check their boards so you notice early.

Reroll peaks early. A 3-star 1 or 2-cost carry is very strong in stages 3 and 4 but can struggle against boards full of 4 and 5-costs late. Do not forget to level once the 3-stars are done.

What is slowroll?

Slowrolling means staying above 50 gold and rolling only the excess each round. With 58 gold you spend 8 on 4 rolls, stay at 50 and keep your 5 interest. Your interest keeps flowing while you still see a few extra shops every round.

Reroll comps are usually played with a slowroll (at level 5, 6 or 7). Some 4-cost comps slowroll at level 7 or 8 too. The difference: a roll down finishes the board in one go, a slowroll spreads the same work over several rounds. Slowroll with high health, roll down with low health.

When to stop slowrolling: when your health is dropping fast, or when the copies you need are piling up on opponents' boards. At that point waiting for interest only gets you eliminated.

Playstyle labels on our comps

Every comp on our list has a playstyle label. Reroll and Slow Roll comps stop at an early level and roll; Fast 8 and Fast 9 comps put their gold into levels. The "when to play" part of each comp page spells out what to do on which round. The examples below come from our current comp list, in tier order.

How do you slowroll?

Stay above 50 gold and roll only the excess each round. You keep your 5 interest and still see a few extra shops every round.
